I had a client last week that was finding it difficult to fit exercise into her daily calendar. Her job demands long hours, then running the kids around, trying to fulfill family responsibilities. By the time it got to the weekend there were only a few hours of rest, family time, and then the week would start over again.  Honestly, I don’t know how she survives on 4-5 hours of sleep most nights. We trained (and talked) and the more we realized just how much lifestyle exercise she does fit into her day. Lifestyle exercises are activities that you can work into your daily routine. Living in the city allows her to walk the kids to daycare rather than drive. Her job requires her to be on her feet most of the day, and when she can she takes the stairs rather than the elevator. She prefers leisure exercise to lifestyle exercise- like hitting the gym to train with me or burning out frustrations on the cycling machine. I agree there is something magical about using our bodies like athletes and feeling empowered after a great workout. But on the days you can’t make it to the gym or hit tennis balls on the court, find small ways to keep yourself active in the midst of your chaotic schedule. No small activity goes unnoticed to your body. See if this week you can try to fit in a few short stretch breaks at your desk or a gentle walk around the block after dinner. Fit exercise into your daily routine and your body will thank you for it!
