Because of or In spite of: You Choose

I was thinking the other day.  A dangerous thing I know.  I was thinking about choices, chances and outcomes.  I was thinking how often in my life I say something like “Because I didn’t have  or someone else did_________(fill in the blank) I didn’t do as well as the other guy.”  Have you ever been there?  I am guessing you know what I am talking about.  That little voice (or maybe big voice) that likes to place blame on someone or something else for our failures, inadequacies, imperfections etc.  Well I am now working to switch out that little voice and replace it with a very different one……the “in spite of” voice.  That voice that says “In spite of the fact that I never had or did or even though someone else ______(fill in blank) I am going to work hard, be committed and accomplish my goals.”  Yes that voice.  The one that says, come on, today is the day to take ownership, to be empowered, to say I can and I will despite…….in spite of the challenges that have either been laid before me or I have placed in front of myself due to less than ideal personal choices.

Join me today……..start off by saying………..”In spite of_______(fill in the blank) I will_______(fill in the blank)”.  You and I both can achieve our goals for health, for success and for function if we are just willing to change our mindsets, step up to the challenges ahead of us and create our own destiny……………..in spite of!

NHA Healthy Living Conference

We are headed to the NHA Annual Healthy Living Conference this weekend.  It always brings back fond memories for me.  My Grandfather was one of the “founding fathers” of the organization.  Back in the day it was called the “Natural Hygiene Society” and was quite revolutionary.  Today many of the tenants it espouses are almost mainstream.  Ideas like no smoking, eating plants, daily exercise, stress management.  All that was relative “voodoo” back in the day.  We have come a long way ‘baby’ and with your help we’re going to continue to move forward one life at a time.  The NHA Conference always brings together some great thinkers, speakers and participants.  Hope to see you there!

FITT for Summer

Are you contemplating starting a new exercise program?  Perhaps you have a 5k coming up, a new weight loss goal, or maybe you heard my “Exercise and Alzheimer’s” talk and want to reduce your future risk of cognitive decline.  Regardless of your reasons, a simple tool to help you succeed is F.I.T.T.  This simple mnemonic stands for Frequency, Intensity, Time and Type.  Use FITT as you develop an exercise plan.  Frequency:  How often can you/will you exercise per week.  Intensity: What intensity is safe for you and will help you achieve your goals? Time: How long per time?  10 minutes to 2 hours.  Dependent on your schedule, goals, previous fitness etc you will map this out.  Our last T is Type:  Whether a sport (like tennis, basketball, running, soccer) or a gym routine, pilates class or the like.  This can be one of the most important decisions.  Choose something you enjoy and don’t be afraid to vary it!  You can find some great workout tips and programs in our store.  Go check them out, download a few and get moving!  Use FITT to help you succeed, and use SMART Goals to guide you!
